'Living in Doggy Style'

September 13, 2016

Before and After photos of Copper's up-cycled Dog House.

What better way to show your affection than to give your pooch a dog house, all the other dogs will envy!

We recently we had a customer inquire about up-cycling this pine dog house, due to the finish failing in spots. No sanding, priming or prep was required for this piece.

Brittany was delighted to do this custom project here at Heartstrings for our customer. She applied two coats of Emperors Silk Chalk Paint™ decorative paint by Annie Sloan. First she did a quick thin coat followed by a thick textured coat.

To create a dark, deep textured look mix 50/50 of the Annie Sloan Soft Dark Wax with Mineral Spirits to create a dark wax glaze. Using an inexpensive paint brush, apply the dark wax glaze over your piece, then wipe back the glaze.

This dog house is almost complete - This particular dog house is for use indoor use and therefore we were able to seal with the Annie Sloan Dark Wax glaze combination. However to finish this piece and make it durable for outdoors you can apply one coat of Artisan Enhancements Clear Top Coat Sealer.

'Hilton's Antlers Get A Makeover'

September 14, 2016

It might just be a Canadian thing eh?

A little moose trivia - Moose are the tallest mammals in North America. Their height, from hoof to shoulder, ranges from 5 to 6.5 feet. Male moose, called bulls, have massive antlers. These can grow 6 feet wide from tip to tip.

In this photo you can see Hilton's antlers are in need of some TLC.

The solution - Custom colour mix of Chalk Paint™ decorative paint by Annie Sloan and Artisan Enhancements Clear Top Coat Sealer (Both are ideal outdoor products & designed to work together!)

To create the custom brown colour Brittany mixed the following colours of Chalk Paint™

  • 1 part Primer Red (1 cup)
  • 1 Part Olive (1 cup)
  • 1/2 Part Graphite (1/2 cup)

To seal the antlers Brittany is using Clear Top Coat Sealer by Artisan Enhancements™. This is a soya based, exterior grade, no VOC, non-yellowing alkyd penetrating sand-able sealer. It is water resistant (once cured).

It is not recommended over white paints as they have no pigment; use Artisan Enhancements Clear Finish instead.

Here Brittany is applying 1 very thin coat using a high quality flat edged brush, we recommend the Artisan Enhancements top coat brush. Allow to dry completely before applying a second layer. For our moose we used one layer of Clear Topcoat Sealer.
As you can see here the Artisan Enhancements Clear Topcoat Sealer is a white colour until dried completely.

Once dry you will end up with a beautiful finish that is formulated for clarity with a matte outside durable - just come by and visit us to have a look for yourself and let us know what you think!
What an improvement!
This entire project was complete in under an hour.
Hilton you look so handsome maybe you will get some visitors this winter! We were told by the designer of Hilton that the female moose may come to hang out for protection in the winter months, so far he has had no dates!
